Recyling Handtrials

Handtrials have an important role in the design process, helping designers and clients finalise colour, texture and pattern before production begins.

Although they have a relatively short life, they contain valuable materials that still have more to offer once their original purpose has been fulfilled.

Rather than treating returned handtrials as waste, we wanted to find a way to keep those materials in use. Today, returned handtrials from any global project can be sent to our recycling facility in Devon, where they are recycled into underlay products.

When returned, the handtrials are shredded, this material then follows one of two routes. It can be used in the manufacture of Wool Felt, our contract underlay made using recovered wool fibre, or as part of Axfelt Triple Layer, helping extend the life of valuable materials beyond a single use.

How can I return my handtrials?

If you're close to our London Design Studio, simply drop your handtrials into the studio. They will be included in our regular monthly transfer to Devon, making use of an existing journey.

If you're based elsewhere, handtrials can be returned directly to our recycling facility in Devon. If you're working across multiple projects, we encourage returning them together in a single shipment where practical. Consolidating returns helps reduce transport emissions while ensuring the materials can be recycled into new products.
